Located in Shanghai, a renowned International metropolis drawing more and more attention from all over the world, Shanghai Jiao Tong University is one of the first national institutions of higher learning in China with a shining history of more than 114 years (established in 1896). SJTU now offers many English-medium degree programs, such as bachelor's degree programs Mechanical Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, master's degree programs LL.M. (Master of Laws), International MBA, Chemical Engineering and the S.J.D. (Doctor of Juridical Science) program. 

ProgramAbout the Program

The International Preparatory Program is a non-academic pre-school preparatory education program for international students set up by the College of Lifelong Education of Shanghai Jiao Tong University. 

The Foundation program is tailored to the characteristics of international students. International students can improve their language, professional and cross-cultural communication skills according to their needs, and lay a solid foundation for future university studies. International preparatory students who pass the official assessment can be prefered to study at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. 

International Preparatory Students Program includes:

 Project A enrollment target is international students who have a good Chinese language foundation (HSK 4≧180 or equivalent Chinese language level) and need to further improve their Chinese, English, mathematics and other subjects. 

Project B provides Chinese language training for international students with no or weak Chinese language foundation but good performance in other subjects, and also helps students improve their academic ability in mathematics, English and other aspects. 

For international students who have a certain English foundation and need to further improve their English, mathematics and other subjects, this program is taught in English. The above three types of projects are set up according to the needs of science, agriculture, medicine and humanities and social sciences two major directions. The department of Science, Agriculture and Medicine corresponds to the majors of shipbuilding and ocean engineering, mechanical engineering, computer science and technology, software engineering, materials science and Engineering, aerospace engineering, environmental science and engineering, Chemical Engineering and technology, statistics, biotechnology, biomedical engineering, pharmacy, Clinical medicine, Stomatology, etc. Humanities and Social Sciences correspond to finance, economics, business administration, accounting, communication, radio and television production, visual communication design, language and other majors.

About Shanghai JiaoTong University

Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU), directly under China’s Ministry of Education, is a key university jointly funded by the Ministry and Shanghai Municipality.   Shanghai Jiao Tong University, known as Nang Yang Public School, was founded in 1896 by Mr. Sheng Xuanhuai. It is one of the oldest universities in China. The University, over the past century, has turned out a large number of excellent personnel and made significant contributions to the development of science and technology. The former president of the China JIANG Zemin and the following distinguished figures LU Dingyi, DING Guangen, WANG Daohan, QIAN Xuesen, WU Wenjun, ZOU Taofen, MAO Yisheng, CAI Er, HUANG Yanpei, SHAO Lizi, WANG An and so on are all graduates from Shanghai Jiao Tong University . Of all the academicians of China's Academy of Sciences and Academy of Engineering, more than 200 are the alumni of Jiao Tong University.

Since its adoption of the reform and opening up policy in China, SJTU has taken the lead in the management system reform in the institutions of higher learning, thus regaining its vigor and vitality as well as momentum for rapid growth as never seen before. A number of its disciplines have been advancing towards the world's first-class level, such as communication and electronic system, naval architecture and ocean engineering, automatic control, composite materials, and metal plasticity processing. A batch of burgeoning branches of learning have occupied an important position in the country, such as Large-scale integrated circuit, computer science, optical fiber technology, systems engineering.

Today SJTU boasts 20 academic schools: the schools of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering, Mechanical & Power Engineering, Electronics & Electric Engineering, Material Science and Engineering, Sciences, Life Science and Technology, Humanities and Social Science, Civil Engineering and Mechanics, Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Management , International and Public Affairs, Foreign Languages, Agriculture and Biology, Environmental Science and Engineering , Pharmaceutics, Medical, Law, Media & Design, Micro-electronics, Information Security, Software and 2 directly affiliated departments: Department of Plastic Technology and the Department of Physical Education, plus a Graduate School. Besides, it also has School of Continuing(adult) Education, School of Online Learning, School of International Education, and a Vocational School. There are 60 undergraduate programs, 152 masters-degree programs, 93 Ph.D programs, 16 post-doctorate programs, 16 State key doctorate programs and 14 State key laboratories and National engineering centers.

SJTU boasts a good number of famous scientists and professors, including 22 academicians of the Academy of Sciences and Academy of Engineering, 31 "Changjiang Chair Professors" and more than 1, 420 professors and associate professors.

Its total enrollment of full-time students amounts to 38,000. There are 18,000 undergraduates and 18,100 candidates for Master's Degree and Doctor's Degree.

The centennial Jiao Tong University has inherited its old tradition "high starting points, solid foundation, strict requirements and extensive practice" which has cultivated one group of qualified students after another. Today the old tradition is endowed with new content and has become the fine style of learning of Jiao Tong students. With such tradition SJTU is training students into excellent qualified talents with solid and broad theoretical foundation, complex knowledge structure, international communicative ability and comprehensive development in morality, intelligence and physical fitness. Students from SJTU have achieved top prizes in various competitions, such as the International Mathematical Contest in Modeling and Electronics Design Contest. Teachers from SJTU have won a number of top prizes in the national Award of outstanding achievements in Education for their teaching, research and textbooks compiled.

SJTU has beautiful campuses, occupying an area of more than 200 hectare in total, and possesses plenty of advanced teaching and research equipment and facilities. Now, it has six campuses, the Xuhui, the Minhang, the Qibao, the Shangzhong Road , the Fahuazheng Road and the Chongqing Road(south). Over the past decade, the number of students in SJTU has grown from 5,000 to more than 38,000, the floorage of various buildings from 230,000 square meters to 800,000 square meters, and the area of campuses from 40ha to 200ha. Apart from the major buildings such as the Lecture Buildings, Laboratory Buildings, Dormitories and Gymnasiums, SJTU also has the Bao Zhaolong Library which is well-known throughout the country. Various laboratories, including university central laboratories such as "Computer Center" and "Audio-visual Education Center" are equipped with advanced research and teaching equipment and facilities.

Shanghai Jiao Tong University has been actively involved in International academic exchange programs with foreign universities. To date, it has established relations with more than 100 renowned universities and colleges in the world as well as connections with many research institutions, corporations and enterprises at home and abroad. SJTU has invited more than 100 famous scientists and specialists as honorable professors or consulting professors, including the Nobel prize winners and physicists Yang Zhenning, Li Zhengdao and Ding Zaozhong. SJTU sends excellent teachers and students abroad every year to give lectures, to study or to attend international academic conferences, meanwhile SJTU invites foreign specialists and scholars to give lectures or to have academic exchanges. Accommodation

Building 10 (Single Room)· RMB 8600 per semester for each person without including utilities;
· Building 10 comprises three units;
· Each room contains a separate bathroom with shower and is furnished with a single bed, a nightstand, a desk, a chair, a small bookshelf, a wardrobe, a fridge and an air conditioner;
· Shared kitchen in each unit;
· Laundry room with laundry machines, dryers and water heaters on the first floor;
· Internet access for each room.

Building 51 (Double Room)· RMB 4800 per semester for each person without including utilities;
· There are two units (East Unit and West Unit) on each floor, and each unit comprises two suits;
· Each suite contains four bedrooms with a shared restroom, a shared shower room and a shared living room furnished with a bookshelf, a desk and a shoe cabinet;
· Each bedroom is furnished with a single bed, a nightstand, a desk, a chair, a small bookshelf, a wardrobe, a fridge and an air conditioner;
· Shared kitchen on the first floor;
· Laundry room with laundry machines, dryers and water heaters in the West Unit on the first floor;
· Two shared reading rooms on the first floor;
· Internet access for each room.

B. Xuhui Campus

South Lianxing Building
(Single Room)· RMB 70 per day for one person without including utilities;
· Short term rent: RMB 120 per day for one person without including utilities;
· A six-floor building;
· Each room contains a separate bathroom with shower and is furnished with a single bed, a nightstand, a desk, a chair, a small bookshelf, an air-conditioner, a television and a fixed telephone, etc;
· Each floor has a shared kitchen with a fridge, etc;

North Lianxing Building (Single Room)· RMB 75 per day for one person without including utilities;
· Short term rent: RMB 130 per day for one person without including utilities;
· A six-floor building;
· Each room contains a separate bathroom with shower and is furnished with a single bed, a nightstand, a desk, a chair, a small bookshelf, an air-conditioner, a television and a fixed telephone, etc;
· Each floor has a shared kitchen with a fridge, etc;
· Laundry room with laundry machines on the first floor;
· Internet access for each room.

Building 9 (Single Room)· RMB 75 per day for one person without including utilities;
· Short term rent: RMB 130 per day for one person without including utilities;
· A four-floor building;
· Each room is furnished with a single bed, a nightstand, a desk, a chair, a small bookshelf, a wardrobe, a fridge, an air-conditioner, a television, a fixed telephone and a microwave oven, etc;
· A shared bathroom with shower on each floor;
· Internet access for each room.

If you need dormitory on campus, room reservation should be made when application. If dormitories are full, we don’t accept any room reservation.

ENROLL IN CHINA

Entry Requirements

  1. High school graduate or equivalent.

  2. Non-chinese citizens who hold a valid foreign passport and comply with the Ministry of Education's Notice on Regulating the Acceptance of International Students in our Institutions of Higher Learning and other relevant regulations.

  3.  Be physically and mentally healthy.

  4.  Be at least 17 years old and not more than 23 years old before enrollment.


Application Materials

The applicant shall ensure that the application materials and information provided are true, accurate and complete. If it is found to be untrue, the applicant will be disqualified from applying for admission or studying. 

  1. High school diploma or equivalent. Fresh graduates can first provide a pre-graduation certificate issued by their high school.

  2. High school profile, in Chinese or English (such as the overall situation of the school, admission requirements, admission, curriculum system, high school score scoring system, admission status, etc.).

  3. Passport information page (valid for more than 6 months) and personal identification photo (color, crown free).

  4. Self-statement letter, in Chinese or English (signed by myself, including but not limited to personal background, hobbies and strengths, reasons for application and study plan, 600-1000 words).

  5. One recommendation letter, in Chinese or English (the referrer needs to sign and provide contact information such as email and phone number). 6. Proof of academic level: 6.1 Transcript issued by your high school (including all courses in high school).

  6. 2 Unify high school graduation examination or college entrance examination scores, such as SAT/ACT/IB/ A-Level/UEC, etc. in your country or region. If the above test results or other results recognized by the program are not available, information must be provided.

  7. Proof of Language proficiency Students applying for Project A are required to provide HSK score (HSK Level 4 ≥180) or equivalent qualification. Students applying for Program C are required to provide a TOEFL score (total score ≥80) or an IELTS score (total score ≥5.5) or equivalent qualification.

  8. Applicant's birth certificate.

  9. Nationality or household registration certificate of both parents (passport or ID card).

  10. If both parents or one parent is a Chinese citizen, the following supporting materials shall be provided: 10.1 Proof that the applicant acquired foreign nationality at birth or later acquired foreign nationality. 10.2 If the applicant acquired foreign nationality at birth, ① if both parents or one parent is a Chinese citizen and has permanent residence abroad, the corresponding permanent residence certificate of the parents shall be provided; (2) If both parents or one parent is a Chinese citizen but has not obtained permanent residence abroad, the applicant shall provide a certificate of renunciation of Chinese nationality. 10.3 If the applicant is a Chinese citizen and acquires a foreign nationality after being a Chinese citizen, he/she shall provide a certificate of cancellation of the original Chinese household registration and a certificate of renunciation of Chinese nationality. 10.4 Signature page of the applicant's passport entering and leaving China from April 30, 2020 (inclusive) to the time of application.

  11. Applicants under the age of 18 as of September 1, 2024 shall provide a guardian guarantee certificate in China (a notarized document recognized by our school is required).

  13. Other materials that need to be described. Note: ① If the above application materials are not in Chinese or English, notarized Chinese or English translation must be provided. There is no need to mail paper application materials at the application stage.
