Foundation Programs

Tianjin University, the first institution of higher learning in the history of modern China, is one of the key universities of the country. As one of China's best research universities, TJU offers fully developed courses in science and technology, economics, management, etc. Since 1980's, Tianjin University has established academic exchange and cooperation relations with some 40 universities in over ten countries and regions, including USA, Britain, Japan, German and Canada. TJU offers both degree and non-degree programs covering a wide range of majors, such as business management, computer science and technology, art and so on. Tianjin University currently offers 67 undergraduate programs, most of them are 4-year full-time study (except for the program of architecture which requires 5 years). The programs are usually delivered in Chinese, while Chemical Engineering (IChemE Accredited), Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering and Pharmaceutical Science could be taught in English. Students will be awarded with a Bachelor's degree and graduation certificate if they finish all of the given course work and pass their thesis defense. Furthermore, students pursuing majors that are taught solely in Chinese are required to achieve a band score of 5 under the Chinese Language Proficiency Scales for Speakers of Other Languages. Students pursuing the major of Chinese are required to achieve a band score of 6 or equivalent. Students pursuing majors that are taught solely in English are required to achieve a band score of 4.

Founded in 1895 with the name Peiyang University, Tianjin University is the first university in China. 1. There are two on-campus international student dormitories: Youyuan international student dormitory and Liuyuan international student dormitory, single rooms in Youyuan and double rooms in Liuyuan are provided for international students.

2. Upon arrival, international students can directly apply for rooms on the reception desk, fill in the accommodation registration form; get the room key and hand over CNY10 for key's deposit.

3. There are 80 kilowatt-hour electricity costs offered by the university for Chinese government scholarship students each month, anyone of Chinese government scholarship students exceed limit of electricity, the extra electricity costs will be covered by him or herself. Self–supporting international students should be financed the electricity costs in Youyuan or Liuyuan international student dormitory international student dormitory, it is necessary to pay for 200 kilowatt-hour electricity costs when he/she live in a room for the first time, at present, it is CNY 0.55 for a kilowatt-hour.

4. The telephones in the rooms are 201 card telephones, international students can purchase telephone cards while use them.

5. The rooms in Youyuan international student dormitory, B and D Area of Liuyuan international student dormitory are equipped electric water heaters and can supply 24 hours hot water.

6. The laundries are equipped in Youyuan and Liuyuan international students dormitories, international students should purchase the cards form the service department to use them.

3 Steps to Apply to a Chinese University

Applicants for foundation program should hold a high school diploma and be under the age of 24. Applicants who are still under the age of 18 as of September 1st, 2025 must submit the original guardian certificate issued by the Tianjin District Notary Office, and the Guardian must be a permanent resident of Tianjin. 

For Chinese-instructed program applicants: Students are required to submit HSK-5 certificates with the minimum score of 180. HSK 4 (180 or above) for programs in school of international education. Native Chinese speakers and applicants who complete the lastest study in Chinese are allowed to be exempted from providing HSK Certificates. Applicants for Foundation Program (March 2025) need to submit HSK-4 or above, or certificate of Chinese learning for more than one year. 

1. Scan of original high school diploma or original notarized diploma. (Scan of Pre-graduation Certificate is required if the applicants have not gained degree certificate before the application deadline. Please resubmit the original highest diploma or original notarized diploma before registration).

2. Scan of notarized copy of the high school academic transcripts or scan of international standardization test results (such as SAT/ACT/A-Level/AP/IB etc.)

3. Photocopy of passport within the validity period. Applicants who have immigrated to other countries or whose parent is a Chinese national should provide proof of time for naturalization, proof of renunciation of Chinese nationality and a visa record of recent four years. 

4. Proof of Chinese or English proficiency (For specific requirements, please refer to Qualification of Applicants) 

5. Study Experience Resume (The start and end time of each education experience must be uninterrupted, and education level should start from senior high school).

6. Photocopy of Foreigner Physical Examination Form (The medical examinations must cover all the items listed and should be conducted after October, 2023). 

7. Applicants who are now in China must submit scan of Photocopy of Visa and Transfer Certificate from present school. 

8. Applicants who are not in China at present must submit scan of Certificate of Non-Criminal Records (Fresh high school graduates are required to submit a certificate that shows the applicant's good record of conduct and performance in school, issued by their respective high schools).

All uploaded documents should be in Chinese or in English; otherwise notarial translations in Chinese or English are required. Once translated, the original documents and certified translations are to be submitted together to the application system.
