Scholarship
Overview
International students of Tsinghua University may apply for Chinese Government Scholarship (CGS), Beijing Government Scholarship (BGS), or Tsinghua University Scholarship (TUS). The scholarships are categorized into full scholarships and partial scholarships. Full scholarships cover tuition, accommodation, meals and medical insurance, etc. Partial scholarships cover full tuition or partial tuition.
The scholarships are preferentially awarded to excellent international students for degree studies at Tsinghua University. The students who have been granted scholarships are requested to participate in annual review, and those passing the annual review are eligible for next-year scholarship support.
In autumn 2010, twenty-four percent of the degree program international students of Tsinghua University have been awarded scholarships. Among the newly admitted degree program students, nineteen percent win Chinese Government Scholarships, and twelve percent win Beijing Government Scholarships or Tsinghua University Scholarships.
Three kinds of scholarships in Tsinghua
Chinese Government Scholarship (CGS)
The Chinese Government Scholarship (CGS) scheme was established by the Ministry of Education of China in accordance with educational exchange agreements or understandings reached between Chinese government and foreign governments, educational organizations, institutions and relevant international organizations to provide full scholarship and partial scholarship to international students and scholars.The China Scholarship Council (hereinafter referred to as CSC) administers the recruitment of international students and routine management of the Chinese Government Scholarship scheme.
Foreign students who are applying for admission to Tsinghua University may apply for CGS support. The scholarship application should be directed to the Chinese Embassy or Consulate in the applicant’s home country. The application time is from last November to April of the year (varied for different countries). Please find out the application deadline for your country in advance.
In addition, Tsinghua University is authorized by Ministry of Education of China to recommend applicants as CGS candidates. The scholarship is only open to the applicants who are not studying in China, and the total number is limited. The applicants need to submit Application Form for Tsinghua University Scholarship (for Future Students) along with other admission application documents to the related offices in Tsinghua University.
Foreign students who are pursuing Master or doctoral degree at Tsinghua University or those who have been approved to continue their study at Tsinghua University for a higher degree may apply to CSC for The Distinguished International Students Scholarship. The scholarship application shall be submitted via Foreign Student Affairs Office, Tsinghua University to CSC in March each year.
Foreign students who have been granted CGS support are requested to complete the Form for Annual Review of Chinese Government Scholarship Status, and submit together with transcripts to Foreign Student Affairs Office in March each year.
Beijing Government Scholarship (BGS)
The Beijing Government Scholarship (BGS) was established by Beijing Municipal Government, aiming to attract and encourage excellent foreign students to study in Beijing. The BGS scholarship covers the tuition fees of foreign students, fully or partially, and need to be applied year by year.
The Foreign Student Affairs Office, Tsinghua University is authorized by Beijing Municipal Government to be responsible for the acceptance, review, and approval of the scholarship applications, as well as for the annual review of the scholarship, for foreign students who are applying for admission to or studying at Tsinghua University.
Tsinghua University Scholarship (TUS)
The Tsinghua University Scholarship (TUS) was established by Tsinghua University, aiming to encourage and support excellent foreign students to study at Tsinghua University. The TUS scholarships covers tuition fees fully or partially.
The Foreign Student Affairs Office is authorized by Tsinghua University to be responsible for the acceptance, review and approval of scholarship applications as well as for the annual review of the Scholarship.
Foreign students who have been granted TUS support are requested to complete the Scholarship Annual Review Form , and submit together with supplementary materials such as transcripts, certificates of awards, letters of recommendation, and publications to Foreign Student Affairs Office in March each year.
Scholarship Administrative Rules
Chinese Government Scholarship Students
1. International students receiving the scholarship of Chinese government collect living expenses at the Bank once a month with a bank card obtained from FSAO.
2. Living expenses are provided as usual during normal holidays. However, those who fail to return to the University by the end of the vacation without permission are not entitled to get living expenses for the delayed period
3. Students who suspend their schooling due to health reasons shall return to their home countries for rest and recovery. The scholarship granted will also be suspended in that period.
4. According to the regulations of the China Scholarship Council (CSC), scholarship-sponsored students staying for more than one year in China shall go through annual review so as to determine the further granting of the scholarship. Students receiving CSC scholarships are expected to be cooperative with FSAO in the annual review, and submit form for annual review in March.
5. Students can apply for continuing their study as self-financing students once their scholarships are suspended. Students can submit written application for restoring scholarships by the end of the suspension period of one year, and can regain the scholarship once their applications are approved by CSC.
6. For those who haven't received CSC scholarship, there is a chance to apply for DISTINGUISHED INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS SCHOLARSHIP if their academic performance in Tsinghua University is distinguished. The number of this scholarship is very limited. The application time is March. Rules and regulations about this scholarship is the same as above.
The Beijing Municipal Government Scholarship for Foreign Students
1. The Beijing municipal government Scholarship for Foreign Students only offers the tuition fees (in full, in part) to foreign students. The scholarship-sponsored student will have to pay the difference between the tuition and the amount of the Scholarship who has received.
2. According to the regulations of the Beijing Municipal Government Education Committee, the scholarship-sponsored students staying for more than one year in China and wish to continuouslyobtain the scholarship in next academic year shall go through annual review and re-application procedure. Time for submitting application form is March. Students receiving the scholarships are expected to be cooperative with FSAO in the annual review.
3. The scholarship-sponsored students who suspend their schooling due to health reasons. The scholarship granted will not be hold for next academic year.
4. For those who haven't receivedthis scholarship, there is a chance to apply forit if their academic performance in Tsinghua University is excellent. The application time is March.
Other Types of Scholarship-Sponsored Students
The annual review of students sponsored by other governmental scholarships will be carried out in the way similar with that for CSC Scholarship students, only if Tsinghua University is required and authorized by the sponsor
