Shanghai Maritime University (SMU) was established in 1959. It is a multi-disciplinary university teaching subjects relating to engineering, management, economics, law, liberal arts, and science, with special emphasis on shipping technology, economics and management.
In the evaluation of undergraduate education by China’s Ministry of Education, Shanghai Maritime University was awarded Grade "A" (Excellence).
Shanghai Maritime University has an old campus which is located in the downtown of Lujiazui Finance & Trade Zone, Pudong, Shanghai, easily to reach Shanghai’s symbols such as Oriental Pearl TV Tower, Shanghai Bund, etc. Non-Degree Chinese Language & Culture Programs are held in the old campus of SMU. SMU also has an a newly-built campus of 2,000 mu (or 133 h㎡) with modernly-equipped learning facilities and convenient living environment. Degree Programs are held in the new campus of SMU.
The Center for Chinese Studies of SMU, which is in charge of Chinese language and culture teaching for International students, follows the small-class (less than 20 students / class) teaching system to ensure high pedagogical quality. To meet students' needs, the Center offers a variety of courses: long-term courses, crash courses, summer/winter vacation courses, etc.
