If Shanghai is like New York, then isn’t Shanghai University the New York University of China? Although not as influential as NYU, Shanghai University is still one of China’s best 100 universities. In addition to Mandarin study programs, it is one of the few schools in China that provide 100% English-language MBA programs and attracts over 2000 international students annually.

Shanghai University was founded in May 1994, by consolidating four former institutions of higher learning: Shanghai University of Technology, Shanghai University of Science & Technology, Shanghai Institute of Science & Technology and the former Shanghai University. Until now, SHU has offered English-taught MBA and MIT courses for Master’s degree for international students, which is ranked top one in China. Besides, Chinese Languge couse available there is within easy access. You can pass HSK easily if you study Chinese language in SHU.SHU attracts over 2000 international students annually.

About Shanghai University


Shanghai University is one of the key universities in the "Project 211". Shanghai University has a highly qualified and experienced team of faculty. There are currently more than 2,500 full-time faculty members with 11 members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering. Among all faculty members, 428 are full professors (16.97%) and 765 are associate professors (30.33%).

Shanghai University is a comprehensive university with 23 schools and one independent department. It has 68 undergraduate programs, 131 master programs, 17 engineering master programs, 1 MBA program, 35 Ph.D. programs, and 11 post-doctoral programs. It has 4 national key disciplines, 4 key disciplines and 5 special disciplines of Shanghai Municipality. In addition, it has 2 national key labs managed by Ministry of Science and Technology and Shanghai Municipal Government, 1 key research base of sports sociology approved by General Administration of Sport of China, 1 key laboratory of Ministry of Education of China and 1 key laboratory jointly supported by Ministry of Education of China and Shanghai Municipal Government, 1 engineering research center of Ministry of Education of China, 1 special discipline center of Ministry of Education of China and 2 key research bases of humanities and social sciences under Shanghai Municipal government.

Shanghai University is a key talents training base for Shanghai municipality. In October 2003, Shanghai University was one of the first group of universities whose undergraduate education was appraised by the Ministry of Education to be excellent. Its current student body totals around 43,000 (28,000 undergraduates, 8,000 graduates, and 7,000 Higher Vocational students). In addition, there are more than 10,000 students receiving adult education.

Shanghai University boasts research excellence among top universities in China. Shanghai University has one national university science park, one high-tech development zone, and more than 100 various institutes and research centers. During the past five years, Shanghai University ranks among the top 20 and top 30universities in China with regard to research funding and number of research papers published by faculty and students on SCI、EI、ISTP respectively. Also, the number of applications for and granting of patents is among top 20 in China.

Shanghai University is also known for its vigorous international exchanges and cooperation. So far the University has established academic links and cooperation with dozens of foreign universities, including faculty and student exchanges. Currently over 2,400 international students study on Shanghai University campuses.

Shanghai University has three campuses with an area of more than 2,000,000 square meters in total and the building area of the library is 64,000 square meters. The library has a collection of over 3.4 million volumes and over 3,600 periodicals, including 530 international periodicals, and more than 60 network and CD-ROM databases. There are many excellent teaching facilities including experimental centers and multi-media classrooms and sports facilities. The three campuses are connected by optical cable.
Shanghai University always emphasizes Party construction and Spiritual Civilization Construction. In 1998, Shanghai University was graded as the "Advanced University on Party construction and ideological and political work." Since 1994, Shanghai University has been awarded "Shanghai Civilization Unit" for six times and it is also the National Green Model University.

Shanghai University has formulated a grand mid to long term strategic planning for its future development with the higher goals of carrying forward the spirit of Strive Unceasingly, building a green, civilized and information campus, and setting up an advanced talents education and science and technology innovation systems, so that Shanghai University will become a first class comprehensive research university to serve Shanghai as a modern international metropolis.

Accommodation

Yanchang Campus

The international students' dormitory consists of four apartment buildings linked together, named Building Xinyuan, which started using in the year of 2002.With 193 rooms (only 4 double rooms)in which there are 198 beds, the building can accommodate 198 students.

Staff members are particularly assigned to take the responsibility of the security and service 24 hours a day. Boiled water is available in wash rooms of each floor. All the rooms are well furnished and equipped and look neat and beautiful.

There is a laundry room each floor with pre-paid washing machines and a mini-shop selling foods and articles for the daily life for the convenience of international students.

Baoshan Campus

The international students' dormitory consists of four apartment buildings linked together, named Building V and Building Z & W, which started using in the year of 2001, 2006 & 2008. With 186 rooms & 280 rooms in which there are 259 beds & 360 beds, the building can accommodate 245 & 360 students.

Staff members are particularly assigned to take the responsibility of the security and service 24 hours a day. Boiled water is available. All the rooms are well furnished and equipped and look neat and beautiful. Each building has its own elevator except Z & W building. Life turns out to be convenient.

There is a laundry room with pre-paid washing machines in each building and a mini-shop only in V building selling foods and articles for the daily life for the convenience of international students.
