This postgraduate programme represents 1 year of full-time advanced study of the current state of scholarship in language study and linguistics. It provides an introduction to the interdisciplinary and sub-disciplinary dimensions of linguistics, and offers students the ability to develop a critical facility in applying theoretical models and frameworks in language study.
Students take 180 credits worth of modules, including the dissertation element (60c). Students are required to take the module Approaches to language and Linguistics (15c) and the module Research Methods in Applied Linguistics (15c). Students can choose an additional 90 credits from a range of taught elective modules.
The degree equips students with a very high level of knowledge and skills in applied linguistics, critical and adaptable thinking. It is an excellent preparation for doctoral research study.

The University has two buildings designated for international students, building 11 and building 18. All rooms are fully furnished and equipped with a telephone and computer point which enable students to make and receive telephone calls and access the University's data network from their bedrooms.
These are UNNC residences in which students are responsible for providing and cooking their own food. Kitchens or common rooms are provided in which students may prepare their own food, or meals may be bought from the University canteen or cafe on the campus.
Bed linen is provided, and will be changed twice a month free of charge. Students will need to supply their own kitchen utensils. All UNNC student houses are non-smoking, including student bedrooms.
