ProgramAbout the Program

BEng (Hons) Chemical Engineering (2+2/4+0) Course outline Chemical Engineering is the processing of materials on a commercial scale to make useful and valuable products. Typical processes and products include: petroleum refining, petrochemical, bulk chemicals, fine chemicals, pharmaceuticals, fertilizers, food processing, fuels and energy production, water treatment and minerals processing. The course will equip graduates to work at a professional level on activities such as process design and plant operations management. The study programme provides students with core scientific and engineering knowledge together with a range of transferable skills including IT, communications, management, analysis and problem solving. Opportunities to work on projects and practical experimentation occur in all years of the course. Course structure We offer two options for this degree: Option 1: two years’ study in Ningbo, following by two years’ study on a fully integrated programme in Nottingham. Option 2: four years’ study in Ningbo, with one-year “study abroad” possibilities. Year One (Preliminary Year-Ningbo) In this foundation year, the focus is on a special programme and English for academic purposes. Designed by highly-experienced staff at the Univsity’s Centre for English Language Education, this programme prepares students fully for their degree courses. Common modules of study across all degrees include: written and oral communication and study skills sciences such as physics and chemistry maths for engineering and computer science engineering communication and IT skills. This module will have a hands-on approach to ensure competency in: Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Additionally, the module involves the use of a software environment (eg MATLAB) to help solve engineering and mathematical problems related concepts and methods studied during the year while introducing programming technical material in drawing, schematic and graphical format. Students work in small groups to develop their academic English language skills. Year Two (Qualifying Year-Ningbo) Common modules of study covered in the first part of the year across all courses include: professional engineering skills engineering mathematics engineering solid mechanics fluid mechanics and hydraulics introduction to electrical and electronics engineering Specialized modules include: applied chemistry process engineering fundamentals thermodynamics heat and mass transfer separation processes fundamentals

The University is located in Ningbo Higher Education Park, a leafy suburb on the outskirts of the city. The attractive, meticulously landscaped campus features many attractive spaces, including a Chinese garden and an English garden to symbolise the unique partnership behind the University's success. Distinctive canals weave through the University's extensive grounds, attracting many different types of birds.

Most of the students live in halls of residence. These are situated on a conveniently situated campus high street that has a wide range of shops, restaurants and other spaces for relaxation and recreation.

International staff have the option of living in comfortable, modern apartments within walking distance of the administration block, teaching buildings and science and engineering laboratories. The University also has a staff hotel on campus in order to accommodate visiting lecturers and delegates to academic conferences and seminars.

The University's student population has grown from just over 250 to more than 5,000 undergraduate and postgraduate students. This number is expected to increase considerably as the University expands its range of science and engineering degree programmes and attracts more international students from Asia and elsewhere.

Chinese undergraduate students are selected from most provinces on the basis of their college entrance examinations. Competition is stiff for entry to our unique university in China, and students are required to have a minimum level of English to be accepted for degree programmes.

The University is familiar with a wide range of overseas school-leaving qualifications and works closely with the British Council, both in the UK and abroad.
