Chongqing Jiaotong University, situated on the south bank of the Yangtze River and at the foot of Mount Qinglong, with a beautiful campus covering an area of over 100 hectares, is an institution of higher education under the municipal government of Chongqing, P. R. China. Founded in 1951, it has developed into a multi-disciplinary university after over 50 years of unremitting efforts.

Currently, Chongqing Jiaotong University has a number of prestigious specialties in civil engineering including Highway Engineering, Bridge and Structural Engineering, Harbor and Waterway Transportation, together with other non-engineering specialties such as Management, Science, Economics and Arts, etc.

In all, the university has 13 schools: The School of Civil Engineering and Architecture, The School of River and Ocean Engineering, The School of Machinery and Electronic Engineering, The School of Management, The School of Foreign Languages, The School of Finance and Economics, The School of Traffic and Transportation, The School of Humanities, The School of Computer Science and Technology, The School of Open Education, and The School of Vocational Training. The university has 3 departments: The Graduate Department, Physical Education Department, Experiment Department and Social Science Department. The total student enrollment was 22,000 by the end of September 2007.

Altogether, Chongqing Jiaotong University has a postdoctoral mobile research center and offers 46 specialties for undergraduates, 27 specialties for graduate students and 3 specialities for doctoral students. Now it has one National Qualification Education Center, one Engineering Research Center approved by the Ministry of Education, one Key Lab approved by the Ministry of Communications, seven provincial level key disciplines, six municipal level qualified labs for core-course education in Higher Institution, two municipal level model centers for teaching experiments, two municipal engineering technology centers, and one key research base for municipal Humanities and Social Sciences. The university library has a collection of over 1.4 million books and journals, and broadband Internet is accessible on every corner of the campus.

There are approximately 1,800 faculty and staff, among whom 1,100 are full-time teachers with over 500 having obtained senior titles.  Among our faculty, six have been selected as national candidates for the Prominent Personnel Resources Project, two have been awarded the title of the Young and Middle-aged State-ranking Experts with Outstanding Contribution by the State Ministry of Personnel, and 120 are appointed experts at various levels.  Finally, the most eminent three academicians on campus are outstanding members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Furthermore, over 150 experts and scholars from other domestic and foreign universities are employed as adjunct professors.

Chongqing Jiaotong University enjoys a reputation for high quality teaching. In the past few years, great progress has been made in its students’ enrollment and in its graduates’ employment. The average rate of employment for students upon graduation has been over 90% for eight years in succession. Honors have been awarded to the university by all levels of the government because of this outstanding employment rate. Since its founding, the university has produced over 40,000 graduates, many of whom have become backbones of their work units.  For example, Zheng Jielian, academician of CAS, and Liu Xiaofeng, deputy-head of Sichuan Province.

Chongqing Jiaotong University boasts a strong scientific research capacity and has made great contributions to the local economy. In recent years we have undertaken scientific research and design and construction supervision on 70 key projects at the national level and over 300 at the provincial or ministerial level, such as the Three Gorges Water Conservancy Terminal Research Project, the Project on the Chengdu—Chonqqing Freeway, the Canton Humen Bridge, the Wanxian Yangtze River Bridge, the Chongqing Bund, the Chongqing Huanghuayuan Bridge, and many more. Three academic journals are publicly circulated, among which Applied Mathematics and Mechanics is circulated in over 50 countries.

Agreements on cooperative programs have been signed between Chongqing Jiaotong University and some well-known foreign universities including but not limited to Kansas University (USA), Drake University (USA), Kettering University (USA), Wilfrid Laurier University (Canada), Victoria University (Australia), Petersburg State Transport University (Russia), Hannover University (Germany), and Hanoi International University (Vietnam).

Beginning in 2004, the University has enrolled foreign students from countries such as the USA, Belgium, Vietnam, South Korea, Indonesia, the Philippines, Kazakhstan, Nepal, Benin, and the Congo. A complete educational and service system has been formed for foreign students, with a wide social recognition for its results.  A Foreign Students’ Union has been set up for the purpose of enhancing foreign students’ educational experience and enriching their campus lives. It organized numerous activities, for example, the 1st and 2nd Sino-Foreign College Student Evening Party, Intramural Football Competitions, Intramural Sports Meetings, Spring and Autumn Outings, and Talent Shows. Applicants can apply for several scholarships, such as the Confucius Scholarship, the Chongqing Municipal Government Mayor’s Scholarship, and the Chongqing Jiaotong University President’s Scholarship. On-campus dormitories are available to all foreign students. The dorms feature considerate dorm management, fully equipped facilities, and a safe and convenient environment.

3 Steps to Apply to a Chinese University

Non-Chinese, under 45 years old, with a Bachelor’s Degree before the coming September or having worked for 2 years after graduation from a 2/3-year program, excellent academic performance, passed HSK 4

1.  Photocopy of valid passport
With photo, passport number &expiration date and name included.

2.  Passport-sized photo
A passport-sized photo taken recently of the applicant.

3.  Bachelor's degree diploma
Graduation certificate should be in Chinese or English.If not, it should be translated into Chinese or English and be notarized.
