About Hainan University

Hainan University was founded in 1958 and it is the best university in Hainan province. As one of the national "211 Project" comprehensive universities, Hainan University is striving to become one of the best universities in China as well as in the world.

The university runs three campuses, namely Haidian, Chengxi, and Danzhou. Its main campus is located on Haidian Island of Haikou, the capital city of Hainan Province. The Haidian Campus is nestled along the coast of the South China Sea. The fragrant tropical flora help create a beautiful tropical environment and it is an ideal place for learning, teaching and research. Danzhou Campus, located in Danzhou City, west of Hainan Province is well-known as "The hometown of poetry" in China. Chengxi Campus is located in the west of Haikou. The total area of the three campuses covers 741 acres. The University library contains more than 3,035,000 books on different subjects, among which 1,970,000 are paper back, while the other 1,065,000 are electronic.

The university has a high-level faculty of 1,450, including over 820 professors and associate professors, and offers 8 categories of disciplines in philosophy,economics, law, literature, natural sciences,agriculture,engineering,and management. The above categories then fall into 4 major academic schools: School of Tropical Agriculture and Life Science Engineering,School of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering, School of Humanities, School of Social Sciences. The university has 20 colleges and provides 70 undergraduate programs, 130 postgraduate programs and 34 Ph. D programs.

Hainan University is actively carrying out its open teaching and research strategy and striving to develop an all-round, multilevel, and transregional new vista for academic exchange and cooperation with the world at large.

First of all, the university has established intercollegiate relations with 80 well-known institutions of higher learning in more than 20 countries and regions including the UK, Canada, the USA, France, Singapore, Russia, and Taiwan. In view of this, academic exchange and multifacet cooperation have become mutually rewarding and beneficial. In the past three years, as many as 215 excellent students have been sent to study abroad. Secondly, this university strives to provide high quality education for international students. As one of the "211 Project" universities accredited by the Ministry of Education of People's Republic of China, the university is entitled to recruit international students and is designated as one of the bases of Chinese education for international students by the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council. So far more than 3,000 international students from over 30 countries and regions have completed their studies here. Currently, there are about 180 international students on campus, one third of whom are studying undergraduate and postgraduate programs.

Finally, over the past five years, the university has sponsored a faculty of 680 to study abroad or undertake cooperative academic research in more than 80 good universities of 20 countries and regions, which has effectively enhanced the teachers' ability in teaching and research.

expenses for water and electricity should be paid by the students themselves in accordance with the amount they have consumed.

I. Accommodation

1.What procedure should I go through for accommodation?

If you have reserved your accommodation in advance, please make your way to the finance office and show your passport and Letter of Acceptance (offer) to the person concerned. Pay for your accommodation and deposit 200 RMB. Please check in at the Accommodation Management Office and ask for your room key. Make sure that you remember your room number and keep your receipt safe.

2.How is the accommodation fee calculated?

Students who have received their offers from this university and who have reserved their rooms beforehand are required to live for a full term and pay 3200 RMB each term. Spring term refers to the five-month period from March 1st to 31st of July. Autumn term refers to the five-month period from September 1st to 31st January. Students are responsible for their own expenses involving water, electricity, Internet and telephone bills.

3.Can we share a room?

No. The student’s accommodation is designed as one room for one student only.

4.Can we swap a room?

Yes, you can. Provided there is a surplus one.

5.Can we continue to stay during holiday seasons?

Yes. A room is charged 25yuan per day.

6.Is there any procedure to go through to stay on during holiday?

Just fill out an application form in the student office and the office will sort it out accordingly.

7.When should the tuition fee for the following term be paid?

The tuition fee should be paid upon registering for the new term and your fee should be paid once for all.

8.Is it refundable?

a. If the student is dismissed there is no refund, but he or she will get their deposit back.

b. Students who leave the school on personal grounds must follow the following policy:

(a) No refund if they stay for more than two months;

(b) If they stay fewer than two months, they will receive 80% back after deduction based on 25 yuan per day.

10.How is the electricity bill paid?

Electricity is utilized and purchased based on your needs, but once it is purchased there is no refund. It can be purchased at the post office.

11.How are the water bills paid?

Water is charged in accordance with the amount shown on the meter. Water currently costs 2.35 yuan/ ton.

12.Is there a launderette?

There is an automatic launderette within the dormitory hall. Coins at the price of 3 yuan per coin can be purchased at the office.

13.How do students check out?

The checkout procedure requires students to fill out and submit an Application for leaving the university to the dormitory manager at least five days before their departure. Please remember to leave your room key with the office manager one hour prior to your checkout. Make sure that your water bill is paid, your room is clean, and that all of the facilities are still in good condition.

14.How to check out after the new term commences?

Arrange your checkout in the student office by filling out the school departure form application as well as your refund form application. Once this is done, sort out your water bills in the student office and claim your remaining refund from the finance office.

15.What if I have lost my deposit receipt?

Inform the finance office at once because a new receipt takes the office two working days to finalize.

16.What if I have lost my room key?

Ask for assistance in your manager’s office, and pay a certain compensation fee.

17.What if the facilities in my room are damaged?

Ask your office manager for repair without delay. There are no charges involved if the damage is caused by fair ware and tare; if it is caused by inappropriate use, you will be responsible for the repair cost.

18.What if I left my room key in my room?

Ask your office manager for help with your ID or your passport.

19.What if I have relatives or friends come over? Can they share my room?

As required, new comers should register with the police and therefore they are not allowed to stay in your room. You are advised to take him or her to stay in a hotel on campus or nearby.

20.Can I invite friends to my room?

Yes. The visitor in question should register with the office manager. Visitors are not allowed in after 11pm.

21.Can I have a party in my room?

No. Because you may affect other residents if you do so. Make sure that you keep your room reasonably quiet at all times.

22.Can I keep pets in my room?

No. Having pets also affects other residents. Furthermore, it might cause a contagious disease.

23.Can I stay off the campus?

Yes. Provided you apply first, fill in the student living off campus application form, and have the approval of the dean in charge. Students who live off campus should register with local police and then inform the student office within a week of living at their new address. Students who live off campus should be responsible for their own safety, property and any other problematic matters.

II.Food

1.Where to eat?

a. You can dine at the student canteens and purchase food with your student card which can be purchased at the centre near the No. 1 student canteen with your student ID. (You are required to process a campus card at the card management centre. The card costs 20 yuan and you can top it off when your card runs out of credit). Please remember your card number just in case you happen to loose it.

b. You are free to dine out in any of the restaurants off campus.

2, What if I have lost my campus card?

Report to the centre with your student ID and ask for a new one.

3.How can I return the campus card?

Please return it, along with your student ID and meal card to the centre where your card was issued.

4.Is there a Muslim restaurant on campus?

There is a Muslim restaurant on the second floor of the No. 2 student canteen.

III Telecommunication and Internet

1.Where and how can I make a phone call?

You can either make a phone call at the telecommunication service centre on campus, purchase a phone card for your room phone, or use your mobile phone.

2.How does the room phone work?

First you need to purchase a phone card and then access your room phone by following the directions on the card.

3.How can I receive a call from abroad?

To call your room phone, dial 0086+898+room phone number; to call your room from a mobile, dial 00860+mobile phone number.

4.How can I log onto the Internet?

Please contact the student office and they will have the telecommunication company install broadband for you. There are also a number of Internet bars near the school that charge 2 yuan per hour.

5.Where can I receive a fax?

You can either send or receive your fax in the college office. The fax number is ++86+898+66263581, faxes received and sent domestically costs 5 and 8 yuan respectively. To receive and send an international fax costs 5 yuan and 30 yuan respectively.

6.What is the address if my relatives or friends wish to send me mail?

7.How do I send mail?

8.What happens to mail that is sent to me during a holiday?

You can pick up your mail in the student office where we will keep it for you for a week after school resumes. If you fail to collect your mail after a week, your mail will be returned. If you have left this school, we will return your mail to the sender as well.

Entry Requirements

The applicant, who is a high school graduate and capable of studying his/her specialized courses in Chinese, is well behaved and in good health, can apply for admission of undergraduate to Hainan University.
Acceptance is decided by selection after a screening process. If s/he is not capable of studying his/her specialized courses in Chinese, s/he is first expected to study Chinese for one year, and then continue his/her undergraduate studies after passing the Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK Band 6).
